“Integrated FM will evolve towards strategic partnerships, sustainability and technological integration”

Ger de Groot, an experienced manager in facility management and Director of Operations at Apleona in Belgium and the Netherlands, talks about the future of the business in the Netherlands, the role of decarbonising existing buildings, and the qualities that make a successful FM provider.

What does a successful FM company in the Netherland market need to offer its customers?

For me, it's simple. The three most important things to me are: Firstly, integrated FM. Customers want a single provider for multiple services in order to reduce complexity and costs. Secondly, a partner mentality. Customers are looking for strong, proactive, strategic relationships. Thirdly, sustainability and circular economic initiatives. If you can deliver on these three things, I believe you will be a very successful FM company in the Netherlands.

How do you estimate the market growth for the Netherlands over the next few years and how will Apleona Netherland take advantage of this growth?

Reports in the Netherlands show an estimated growth up to 5% over the next 5 years. The main drivers are sustainability and regulation, integration of technical services, and the ageing building stock. To succeed in the Dutch market, FM companies need to be attractive to employees, so providing a good working environment is important. If you have the right people, you can take advantage of that growth by offering our customers the skills they need.

How do you see the future developments for the procurement of integrated FM services?

In my opinion, integrated FM services in the Netherlands will evolve towards strategic partnerships, as well as sustainability and technological integration. Suppliers who can deliver this and are outcome-driven will be best positioned to capitalise on future growth.

How important is the decarbonisation of existing buildings in the Netherlands? What best practice projects can Apleona point to?

Decarbonisation is important in the Netherlands. For instance, we are one of Europe's leading countries when it comes to electric vehicle infrastructure. We are seeing rising demand in tenders and questions from our current customers, as well as in the market. To convince our existing customers of the benefits of decarbonisation, not only in terms of reducing CO₂ emissions but also in terms of reducing costs, we need to highlight successful decarbonisation projects.

What is your vision for Apleona Netherland in the year 2030?

I’m optimistic that our business will be successful given our current progress. We are a strong company with dedicated people.
