"Significant contribution to climate protection"

What is the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)?SBTi is a globally recognised non-governmental organisation that supports companies and financial institutions in setting ambitious emission reduction targets based on the latest climate science. SBTi provides standards, tools and guidelines for defining and achieving these targets. The targets set are then independently assessed and confirmed. This means that the targets are officially in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Many of Apleona's major customers have already joined the SBTi.

Why did Apleona decide to join the SBTi?The share of CO₂ emissions from buildings in global warming is very high. As a company whose services have a major impact on the energy efficiency and sustainability of our customers' properties, Apleona can make an important contribution to their decarbonisation. Many of our large and smaller customers expect Apleona to support them in achieving their climate targets and decarbonising their properties. They also expect Apleona to set similarly ambitious targets for our own emissions. The same applies to many of our business partners, our investors and, last but not least, our colleagues. A contribution to climate protection certified by SBTi is therefore also a competitive advantage for Apleona.

What specific targets has Apleona set itself?
There are essentially two goals: Firstly, reducing emissions in our own operations. This includes emissions that we generate directly in our own buildings, vehicles and facilities. Apleona has committed to reducing its emissions by 55% by 2033 compared to 2023. Secondly, reducing emissions caused by services and materials that we procure and use on behalf of our customers. Apleona is committed to reducing emissions from purchased goods and services by 61% by 2033 compared to 2023.

How and within what timeframe are these goals to be achieved?
By optimising energy consumption in the properties we lease and switching to renewable energies, for example by purchasing renewable electricity for all Apleona Group locations. This also includes – in cooperation with our landlords – switching to low-carbon heating solutions and introducing CO₂ and energy efficiency criteria when leasing new properties.
Another important measure is the gradual conversion of our vehicle fleet to electric and other CO₂-efficient drive systems, with the aim of achieving largely CO₂-neutral driving by 2033.The reduction of the CO₂ footprint of purchased goods and services will be achieved through efficiency measures, adapted procurement processes and innovations in close cooperation with our partners and suppliers.
Interdisciplinary teams from the areas of sustainability, purchasing, HSEQ and experts from all areas of the company will be working in the coming months to flesh out these and other measures, which are to be implemented over the next three to five years.
